Lead The Way



National Autistic Society Calderdale.

Duke of Edinburgh:

NAS have teamed up with Mixenden Activity Centre to develop a group for young people, all of whom are affected by ASD, to work towards the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
 The aim of the group is to offer this opportunity in a safe and welcoming environment. Individual needs can be discussed with the course facilitators and difficulties can be overcome in order to create a positive and challenging experience for the young person.

Bricks4kidz:

NAS have teamed up with Bricks4Kidz to hold a monthly session in Halifax for families who have a child/ young person who is on the autistic spectrum. Siblings are also welcome.

Teen Bowling:

T​his is a regular monthly bowling session for teenagers diagnosed with autism or awaiting their multi-disciplinary assessment for diagnosis. Teen bowling is for young people aged between 9 and 19 - this age limit is not exclusive. The group aims to provide a social opportunity for teenagers affected by autism to meet and have fun in a relaxed environment.

Girls Group:

​This group is for girls aged between 9 and 19 (this age group is not exclusive) and are diagnosed with autism or who have been through the screening process and are awaiting their multi-disciplinary assessment for diagnosis. The group plan their own monthly activities and the aim of the group is for the girls to have a space in which to develop and grow their friendships in a safe and welcoming environment.​

Siblings Group:

The age range of those who attend is predominantly between 8 and 13 years old though this is not exclusive.​
The aim of the group is to provide a safe space for siblings to meet and socialise sharing their unique experiences of having a brother or sister with autism

Music and the deaf.

Yorkshire Music Club:

Yorkshire Music Club sessions are held on Saturdays from 2-4pm at the Music and the Deaf offices in Halifax. 
To cover costs, there is a small charge of £6 per session, and if you have a sibling, the second can attend for half price. Please get in touch with us if you would like to get involved, and we look forward to seeing you there!


Short Breaks.

A short break can give disabled children and young people the opportunity to have an enjoyable experience with or without their parents or carer. It can also give parents and carers a break by providing an extra pair of hands to make everyday things possible. More info.

Sports Zone:

Disability sports sessions for disabled young people aged 6 - 16 years.
North Bridge Leisure Centre - 9am session for young people with low to medium support needs; 10.30am session for young people with high support needs.

Gifted and Talented:

Opening hours: Thursday: 4.00pm - 5.00pm (term time only)
Age range: 6 - 19 years Membership details: Free
Participation and specialist coaching delivered in established disability sport programmes such as 'Sports Zone' along with PE and disability sports development within schools has resulted in children and young people developing their sport and leisure skills in sports specific activities. Weekly athletics related sessions, including wheelchair racing will be delivered by qualified sports coaches. Throughout programme delivery, regional participation and coaching opportunities will be identified maximising the potential of the young people attending.

Cinema.

Autism friendly screenings:

In Autism-friendly screenings, the lights are left on low, the sound is turned down and although you are asked to book an allocated seat, people are encouraged to move around and make noise.

Wheelchair accessible transport between home and Activity Base available. Active Soft Play Gym and Activity Centre 9b Calderdale Business Park, Club Lane, Ovenden, Halifax HX2 8DB

  • Relaxation and sensory stimulation in multisensory room
  • Use of IT suite
  • Art and craft sessions
  • Cooking and baking activities
